Get to know us

We’ve put together a series of videos to give you the chance to learn more about who we are, meet our art therapist, and explore the important work we do.

About Manx Children’s Art Therapy

Meet one of our Directors, Lynsey Smith, as she shares the story behind Manx Children’s Art Therapy and highlights the vital support we provide to children across the Isle of Man.

How Art Therapy makes a difference

Ever wondered what Art Therapy is and how it helps children express what they can’t always put into words?

Fern explains how art therapy can bypass the need for verbal communication, giving children a safe and creative way to explore and express their emotions, especially when words are hard to find.

What materials are typically used in art therapy?

While the possibilities are endless, Fern shares some of the most commonly used materials in sessions.

We’re always in need of supplies – donating art materials is a wonderful way to support our work. If you have any spare items, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Behind the scenes supporting children

Fern shares how many children she supports each week and a glimpse into the behind the scenes work involved – from tailoring each therapeutic approach to suit the individual needs of the child, to carefully documenting each session through detailed write ups.

Why the Manx Children’s Art Therapy is a vital service

In the final video of our ‘Get to Know Us’ series, Fern shares just how vital the Manx Children’s Art Therapy service is for children on the Isle of Man.

Many of the young people we support are facing incredibly difficult circumstances and this service offers them a safe, creative space to begin healing.

Meet our Clinical Art Therapist

Meet Fern Callister – our incredible Clinical Art Therapist based at The Children’s Centre. In this video, Fern shares what inspired her to pursue a career in art therapy.

What does it mean to be a clinically registered Art Therapist?

In this short video, Fern explains what it means to be a clinically registered art therapist and what it involves to be registered with the BAAT – The British Association of Art Therapists.

How are children referred to art therapy?

In this video, Fern explains the referral process – from the initial referral to how each child is carefully assessed by a panel of therapists.

This helps ensure that the most appropriate type of therapy is chosen to best support each individual child’s needs.

Challenges children may be facing

Fern covers some of the emotional and psychological challenges children may be facing when they come to art therapy – including anxiety, the impact of trauma such as abuse or domestic violence, living with chronic illnesses like diabetes, and coping with grief or loss.

Thank you so much for watching, learning, and supporting.

We hope this series has given you a deeper understanding of the impact art therapy can have, and why this work is so important.
